The first of these stages, known as the sensorimotor stage, lasts from birth to around two years. Infants improve their knowledge of the world through trial and error using their actions and perceptions throughout this period of fast cognitive development. These responses differ from earlier child behaviors and demonstrate that within the developmental period, new plans can be developed to achieve the intended aim.
