This is similar to alcohols that have a general formula R-OH, an O- H functional whereby there\u2019s oxygen atom bound with hydrogen .<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">The main difference is that in thiols, there is a sulfur atom instead of an oxygen one. Since alcohols are made up of C-O-H, thiols consist of C \u2013 S -. Some examples of simple thiols include:<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Methanethiol (CH3SH)<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Ethanethiol (C2H5SH)<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">1-Propanethiol (C3H7SH)<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Thiols are more polarizable than alcohols due to the sulfur atom in its thiol group. This enables thiols to take part in reactions such as disulfide bond formation between two thiol groups.
