Myelinated axons are surrounded by an insulating layer called myelin which is produced by certain types of glial cells. This myelin sheath is not continuous, instead, it has gaps commonly known as nodes of Ranvier. In saltatory propagation the action potential travels from one node, or the raised portion of the neuron membrane to the next, skipping the setbacks. This form of conduction known as saltatory (literally means leaping) is a quicker way to conduct nerve impulses. Thus, the myelin sheath decreases the capacitance of the axon membrane and the resistance between the nodes which in turn provides the possibility of the rapid regeneration of the protocols of action impulses on each node.
