The process occurs in three main stages: components, they are glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and the electron transport system. During glycolysis glucose is the initial substrate which is split into pyruvate. It then moves to the mitochondria, where it is further broken down in the citric acid cycle. Thereafter, the final step of the process, the electron transport chain, with the help of high-energy electrons generated in the earlier steps of the process, synthesizes ATP with the help of oxidative phosphorylation.
