use the CUPE Equity timeline to learn more about the growth and development of equity and diversity in Canada's largest union. Pick two items on the timeline that caught your attention and explain what you found interesting/compelling/disappointing/etc by them.
The CUPE timeline present the journey and history of championing equality within the nation, communities, and workplaces. The timeline includes various events that catch the attention of audiences. Two events that I found interesting are campaign for equal pay and the event in which maternity leave was negotiated. The campaign for equal pay was led by the workers of Saskatchewan hospital. They run a yearlong campaign in 34 locals for provincial bargaining, demanding equal pay for equal work, picketing government, and a living wage for maids, domestics, and other hospital workers. In the same year, maternity leave for six months was negotiated at New Brunswick health center. The condition was that during the maternity leave, seniority should not be lost. Both events made a significant change in the working environment within the country. They are milestones in the history of Canada that could be seen as major factors for changing the employment landscape of the country. Equal pay for equal work was needed to avoid discrimination within the workplace in the country. It could significantly encourage people and guide employers to provide wages to workers. Maternity leave of six months increased the participation of women and girls in employment.
The equity seeking group have significantly contributed in healthcare sector and healthcare workers. They have raised their voice for different issues of healthcare workers throughout the country. But apart from healthcare sector, the group has also contributed for different other occupations and workers of those occupations such as railway workers. Canada is one of the most diverse countries in the world. People from different parts of the world come to Canada in the search of employment. The working condition of migrants were not pleasant within the country. They did not have equal rights and hence they feel discriminated within the country. Hence, the group demanded justice for migrant workers in 2014. The group called on the federal government in order to address the rights of the migrant workers. The group analyzed that the migrant workers were facing a lot of challenges within the country such as long working hours and less pay. Hence, it was necessary to ensure that they also get equal treatment from employers. The effort of the group helped in ensuring the right of migrant workers within the country.
