Psychology can be defined as a branch of scientific study that helps in studying the mind as well as the behavior of humans. It is a broad field that encompasses the study of behavior, personality, motivation, thought, emotion, and development of individuals. A psychologist is an individual who studies behavior as well as the mental process of individuals by analyzing recording, as well as interpreting how they related to each other and the environment (Brennan & Houde, 2017). A psychologist does not only provides therapy and other intervention to shape or change the behavior of individuals but they do a lot of work including scientific research, developing programs to improve the performance and productivity of schools and workplaces by resolving psychological issues, identifying as well as diagnosing behavioral, emotional, as well as a mental disorder, etc.
Psychology is not a new branch of scientific study and its origin can be traced back to 387 B.C. Psychology can be traced in the work of Plato who believed in innate ideas and suggested that the human brain is a seat of mental process. However, the laboratory dedicated to psychology was opened by Wilhelm Wundt in 1879 and from then psychology became a separate branch of study.
Psychology can be applied to the nursing field because it helps in identifying and analyzing human behavior, nurses can use their knowledge of psychology to develop a healthy relationship with patients. It significantly helps in understating the behavior of individual and hence effective interventions can be provided to patients if the medical professional understands the mental process and behavior of patients (de Vries & Timmins, 2017).
