write essay on Legislation passed through Congress and its Impact
It has been nearly a decade since the legislation was passed through Congress and currently 34 states have already expanded Castle Doctrine. The impact of this Castle Doctrine has recorded evidence of increased violence, delay in making arrests of the attacker and the handling of the case becomes more difficult for judges and prosecutors. Homicide and crime reports suggest that stand your ground legislation has caused a significant increase in crime in many states. Racial disparity is also one of the major concerns which discriminates against the intruder based on race, nationality etc. these factors also determine the justifications of the shootings (Kovandzic, et al., 2009). The Castle Doctrine is considered controversial also because of its ability to increase violent criminal activities. For example, after it was passed in Arizona, the incidences of robbery increased especially for armed robberies. In contrast the robberies conducted without any firearms had a relatively slow increase. Besides the rate of suicide has also increased due to the enactment of this act. The Doctrine has also complicated the cases of domestic violence because it serves as an exception where the intruder and the victim share the same house. The victims have to retreat beyond their abilities in many such cases (Messerschmidt, 2016).
