Conflict and Negotiation in General
Question:-
define Conflict and Negotiation in general.
Answer:-
Conflict refers to the disagreement between different people, organizations or nations over significant issues. Difference in interests, perceptions and emotions lead to conflict. Conflicts arise when differences are recognized but not acknowledged. It blinds the judgement and can be destructive (Hudson, et al., 2005). Different types of conflict include intrapersonal, interpersonal, intragroup and intergroup conflicts. Intrapersonal conflict is the personal conflict within a person’s conscience, interpersonal refers to the involvement of two or more parties with different goals, perceptions, values etc., intragroup refers to the disagreement between members of the same group and intragroup refers to conflict with members of other groups.
Negotiation can be defined as a strategic discussion that helps in resolving a problem or issue in a manner that both the parties find acceptable. In the process of negotiation, each party tries to persuade the other to agree with his or her viewpoint. Negotiation is one of the ways to resolve conflict where both parties come to a compromise and the discussions can lead to a win-win, win-lose or lose-lose situation (Bauer & Erdogan, 2006).
Organizational politics is a destructive force that is initiated by a single person or a group of people who use the power or strategy of influence to serve personal interests. Inherent political skills lead to greater success in such actions and it is mostly implicit. It is generally viewed as a negative manipulative tool which can taint a person or organization’s reputation. However, organizational politics can be both positive and negative. Some arguments suggest that organizational politics can be directed at functional motives to benefit the employees or even resolve conflicts (Cacciattolo, 2015). Positive politics can be synonymous with positive influence. On the other hand, negative politics can suppress individual opinion, growth and development in career. It can result from rivalry, power egotism, and control behaviour. It brings down the performance of employees and results in negative outcomes for the organization.
